Things You’ll Need:

  • Charm
  • Some spending money
  • Patience
  • Good luck
Step1

Ask for it. I often find myself standing in a long line being the only one asking if there's a seat up front. I'm not saying that these seats are out there for grab. But if the flight is over-sold, you have a better chance that they will call your name.

Step2

Dress well. Wear business or at least casual business clothing. This will increase your odds. However, if you still end up in the back, you run the risk of having to sit in your suit for 15 hours. Decide if it is worth it.

Step3

Ask for available upgrades to purchase. Sometimes you can spend a few frequent flyer miles and get a decent seat, or you can buy one for a couple of bucks. In this case be prepared to keep a straight face when you hear a 5 figure price, and just politely pass on the "deal". Last time I flew from New York to Kuala Lumpur with a layover in Stockholm, when I had to sit on the plane for 20 hours, I only had to pay $400 for an upgrade. It was sure worth it.

Step4

There is a very nice newsletter, called The First Class Cheap Flyer, which provide you great deals. You can buy the magazine for a higher price, or just benefit from the free newsletter. It is useful when time and destination is not an issue, you just want to travel.
