Cheap Business Class Airfares

Digg! submit to reddit

Finding cheap business class airfares is becoming easier and easier with the deepening recession. There used to be a time not that long ago where cheap business tickets were considered anything less than $2,000. Not anymore. The new goal is $1,000. Yes, it is possible. Here are a couple of tips and recommendations in your hunt for inexpensive business flights.

Use frequent flyer miles to upgrade. It’s a little known fact that it is cost-effective to purchase your ticket as economy class and then use your frequent flyer miles to upgrade the flight to business class. This is a quick way to get the business class cabin without having to pay the business class price.

Use airline carrier websites to find which flights have the sparest capacity. Flights that have a lot of extra seats have a better chance of going on sale than those with few seats remaining. The way to find this information is to go through the initial first steps of the booking process. Usually there is a screen in the beginning that allows you to book your seat. It is from this screen that you can see whether or not a plane is full or not. Your best bet is to perform this check a week or two before the flight.

Try the online discounters. There are a whole host of discount carriers who also have cheap business class airfares in their inventory. The easiest way to find out who these carriers are is to do a Google search on cheap business class airfares. The majority of listings that get returned will fit the bill.

In summary, there is a host of ways to get cheap business class tickets. With a little bit of patience and some focused research, you, too, can get make your next business trip a more cost-effective one.

How to Fly First or Business Class for Very Cheap or Free

Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • Charm
  • Some spending money
  • Patience
  • Good luck
Step1

Ask for it. I often find myself standing in a long line being the only one asking if there's a seat up front. I'm not saying that these seats are out there for grab. But if the flight is over-sold, you have a better chance that they will call your name.

Step2

Dress well. Wear business or at least casual business clothing. This will increase your odds. However, if you still end up in the back, you run the risk of having to sit in your suit for 15 hours. Decide if it is worth it.

Step3

Ask for available upgrades to purchase. Sometimes you can spend a few frequent flyer miles and get a decent seat, or you can buy one for a couple of bucks. In this case be prepared to keep a straight face when you hear a 5 figure price, and just politely pass on the "deal". Last time I flew from New York to Kuala Lumpur with a layover in Stockholm, when I had to sit on the plane for 20 hours, I only had to pay $400 for an upgrade. It was sure worth it.

Step4

There is a very nice newsletter, called The First Class Cheap Flyer, which provide you great deals. You can buy the magazine for a higher price, or just benefit from the free newsletter. It is useful when time and destination is not an issue, you just want to travel.

Business class-only travel was a brilliant theory

Digg! submit to reddit
Independent, The (London) , May 31, 2008 by DAVID PROSSER

OUTLOOK

This is not a happy time to be an airline. If anything at all was surprising about the collapse of Silverjet yesterday, it was that the business class-only carrier has survived this long. Its two rivals in the sector, Eos and Maxjet, were forced to mothball their flat beds many months ago.

Lawrence Hunt, the founder and chief executive of Silverjet, says he is still in discussions with an investor that might yet come to the airline's rescue. But don't hold your breath - it is difficult to imagine why anyone would want to commit their cash.

The killer fact for Silverjet is the cost of fuel for a round trip to New York - broker Daniel Stewart's estimate is that it amounts to around 44,000 today, compared to 28,600 when the airline began flying. For a new airline competing on price, with no economies of scale and little capital to ride out tough times, the figures just cannot be made to add up.

What will really frustrate Mr Hunt is that there is nothing inherently wrong with his belief that a business class-only model is potentially lucrative. Silverjet is just a victim of bad timing rather than poor management - it simply had the misfortune to take off at the same moment as the oil price.

In fact, while there may have been fewer Silverjet customers than Mr Hunt might have liked, many of those who have flown with the airline have raved about the experience and it has boasted high levels of repeat bookings.

No wonder. Silverjet's exclusive terminal at Luton - no harder to get to than any other London airport - enables customers to skip the worst bit of air travel, battling through overcrowded airport facilities to the departure gate. And once in the air, top-notch facilities mean Silverjet passengers are likely to enjoy their flight, particularly having paid considerably less than customers of rival airlines.

The really annoying thing about Silverjet's unfortunate timing is that the past year should actually have been a massive opportunity for the airline. With the global economy slowing, businesses are naturally keen to cut costs. What better way to save money than to send staff overseas on business class-only airlines offering seats at a third of the cost of established rivals?

Silverjet should also have benefited from improving demographics in the UK, US and other Western markets, where populations are older and wealthier. This has increased the size of the non-business market for business class seats, particularly those priced more affordably.

It will be no consolation to Mr Hunt, but all these arguments mean Silverjet will almost certainly not be the last you see of the business class-only model. Even when the oil price comes back down, it is difficult to imagine another start-up targeting the sector, but why shouldn't more established budget airlines move into this territory?

Indeed, low-cost carriers around the world are already targeting business customers, in many cases with enhanced services such as more exclusive lounges, greater flexibility on flight booking or even premium economy-class seats. It's not a huge leap to imagine a carrier such as easyJet launching business class-only services at competitive prices. Or what about Michael O'Leary, the visionary boss of Ryanair, who has already talked of his ambition to run transatlantic services?

The Open Skies agreement that was implemented earlier this year has made the airline sector - the soaring oil price excepted - more conducive to competition. Mr Hunt and his colleagues at Silverjet will now, in all likelihood, miss out on the chance to exploit that opportunity. Expect someone else to step into the breach.

No prizes forpension prudence

No wonder companies keep closing their final salary pension schemes. The premiums employers must pay into the Pension Protection Fund, set up to protect members of schemes run by companies that go bust, will be more than twice as high as the compensation scheme itself had suggested last November. And what will particularly aggrieve many finance directors is that they appear to have been victims of their own prudence.

The PPF raises money in a rather peculiar fashion. Some 20 per cent of its annual levy comes from fees charged to schemes on the basis of their size. The other 80 per cent is a risk-based levy, with premiums based on how well-funded a scheme is and the likelihood of its employer falling into insolvency. There is thus an incentive for employers to keep their schemes well funded - the carrot is a lower PPF levy.

Trouble is, the PPF works out how much money it needs each year before taking a detailed look at the assets and liabilities of individual schemes and their employers. Last November, it decided 675m was the magic figure for 2008-09, only to discover that employers had improved their schemes' funding positions so markedly that the risk-based levy formula would produce a substantial shortfall.

No matter. The PPF warned in November that it expected to have to scale up schemes' bills once it worked out the detail of the risk- based levy. At the time, it reckoned a factor of 1.6 was realistic, but yesterday announced the number required was 3.77.

To put this another way, employers with final salary pension schemes will now have to pay a risk-based levy - remember, this accounts for 80 per cent of the total PPF annual charge - that will be 2.36 times higher than the fee they were expecting only six months ago. All because they have funded their schemes more generously than the PPF had allowed for.

The PPF's justification for what appears to be an injustice is that while scheme funding has improved in the short term, it must protect against long-term risk. That may be, but many employers will feel cheated by this arrangement. Had they not improved scheme funding, their bills would have been even larger of course, but the huge fee increases they face hardly represent the juiciest of carrots.

A reason to buy, but not to sell

If a company's directors don't have sufficient confidence to hold on to its shares, why should investors? Directors' dealings are widely followed both in the City and amongst private investors for good reason - it seems perfectly logical that directors with the inside track on their companies' performance are likely to make sensible decisions about share sales and purchases.

Yet some new analysis from Deutsche Bank, which has for more than a year been monitoring directors' dealings at more than 500 companies across the European Union, suggests that investing on the basis of this information is likely to produce mixed results.

Deutsche found that purchases of shares in their own companies by directors might well be a useful buy signal for investors. On average, over the past year, companies reporting such purchases tended to outperform in subsequent months, with their shares outstripping both the wider sector and country indices.

Intriguingly, however, the same signal is not apparent from sales. When directors sold their companies' stock, there was no sign of the subsequent underperformance from the share price that one might expect.

The German bank offers no explanation for why this should be the case, though it's fair to point out that there are all sorts of motives underpinning the decisions by directors to buy or sell their own shares. Still, it seems odd that one type of transaction should seemingly give such a strong signal when another does not.

The answer may be that company directors are no more astute than the rest of us when it comes to selling out of positions. You have been warned

Southwest insists it's still a 1-class act, despite new 'business select' fares

Digg! submit to reddit

Southwest Airlines, the feisty and unconventional airline founded in the 1970s on cheap fares and one-class service, will start actively courting high-paying business travelers and allowing them to be among the first to board flights.

The Dallas-based discount giant on Wednesday announced changes that CEO Gary Kelly said will generate at least $100 million a year in additional revenue by attracting business travelers willing to spend more for tickets.

The changes come at a time when Southwest's operating costs are rising and industry competition is intensifying for business customers, who tend to book late and pay more.

Starting today, Southwest is raising last-minute fares -- its highest -- and calling that category "business select." Customers who buy those tickets will get a guaranteed place in Southwest's "A" boarding group.

Singapore

As the world enters a period of deglobalization, Singapore is a window into the reversal of the forces that brought unprecedented global mobility to goods, services, investment and labor. With world trade plummeting for the first time since 1982, the long-bustling port has become a maritime parking lot in recent weeks, with rows of idled freighters from Asia, Europe, the U.S., South America, Africa and the Middle East stretching for miles along the coast. Thousands of foreign workers, including London School of Economics graduates with six-digit salaries and desperately poor Bangladeshi factory workers, are streaming home as the economy here suffers the worst of the recessions in Southeast Asia. Singapore is an epicenter of what analysts call a new flow of reverse migration away from hard-hit, globalized economies, including Dubai and Britain, that were once beacons for foreign labor. Economists from Credit Suisse predict an exodus of 200,000 foreigners -- or one in every 15 workers here -- by the end of 2010. Mar 5, 2009

Singapore

Singapore suffered a 12.9 percent drop in visitor arrivals in January from a year ago as the global downturn and a sharp economic slowdown in Asia hurt tourism. The fall in visitors comes at a time when Singapore is trying to boost tourism, with two multi-billion dollar casino-resorts containing thousands of hotel rooms scheduled to open by the middle of next year. The Singapore Tourism Board said in a statement that the city-state received 771,000 visitors last month compared with 885,000 in January 2008 and down from 888,000 in December 2008. The largest number of visitors came from Indonesia, China and Australia. The tourism authority also said the average hotel room rate in Singapore fell 11.7 percent to SGD$209 (USD$135) in January from a year ago, while hotel occupancy dropped to 67 percent from 85 percent a year earlier.

Capital idea of bargain flights Evening Chronicle : Cheap

Councils are shopping around for cheap flights to get the best bargains on travel between the North East and London.

Several councils are using budget airlines to fly people on business to the capital, although the train remains the cheapest option in the majority of cases.

The move comes as two more councils revealed their annual travel bill for officers and councillors.

Sunderland Council spent pounds 236,000 last year, including pounds 11,684 on first class rail tickets for councillors.

Other North East authorities have already revealed they spent pounds 176,000 on first class rail travel last year.

Council chiefs claim travelling first class on business can make sense as people can work on the train.

But the national campaign group, the Taxpayers' Alliance, says first class rail tickets are a perk and councils should stop the practice.

In Sunderland, city council officials say that generally first class travel is only allowed for long journeys.

A review of travel costs is under way as part of a review of budgets across the council. A council spokesman said: "Over recent years the council has utilised cheap air travel in journeys to and from the London area to reduce the costs of travel.

"Given the budget prices offered by a number of airlines and depending on the location of the meeting and associated travelling time, air travel is used where it represents best value."

South Tyneside Council says pounds 233,000 was spent on travel, including rail, plane and taxi costs, for staff and councillors last year.

Transport costs are being reviewed and staff are encouraged to use public transport if possible.

"Other measures include the use of budget airlines and associated transport costs to and from the centre of London as opposed to standard rail travel," said a spokeswoman.

"If rail travel is used, the council recommends booking in advance to obtain the most cost effective rate."

Newcastle Council, which spent pounds 568,000 on travel, including pounds 40,490 on first class tickets, has already ordered a 10% cut.

"In some cases people do fly to London if it works out cheaper, but the majority still use the train," said a spokesman. Gateshead Council, which spent pounds 84,655 on first class travel, is also taking measures to cut costs.

BANGALORE, INDIA - Since its founding 500 years ago, this scrappy city has been called many names that mirror its development: garden city, pub city, fashion capital of India, city of boiling beans.

Today, Bangalore is the Silicon Valley of India.

This technopolis of world-class corporations, said to be Asia's fastest-growing city, is where the future of tens of thousands of U.S. workers will be determined.

More than 1,300 foreign and Indian tech businesses have been drawn to Bangalore by cheap labor, highly educated workers and an endless supply of people who speak fluent English.

Add a pro-business government, cheap telephone service and the Internet for a combination that is irresistible to cost-conscious firms rocked by a worldwide economic slowdown.

Shifting jobs overseas to lowwage locations is called outsourcing, and many companies are doing it.

Agilent, Hewlett-Packard, Intel, Oracle, Quantum -- all U.S. tech corporations, all important Colorado Springs employers, have set up shop in India.

They and other big companies are moving thousands of programming, design, customer support and other jobs overseas to cut costs.

At the same time, Indian technology companies are proliferating -- Wipro, Infosys, Sasken and MphasiS BFL, all aristocrats of corporate India, offer one-stop shopping packages to U.S. companies, ranging from back-office work to software development.

Bangalore's growth is blistering.

Almost 600 multinational and Indian companies have emerged since 1999.

A hiring spree is under way. Infosys will add 10,000 engineers this year. AOL is recruiting. Wipro may hire 9,000. Google is looking, too.

Colorado Springs is reeling while Bangalore is rocking.

Colorado Springs hit a wall when the U.S. economy soured in 2000. Since then, almost 10,000 jobs have disappeared. Most were tech jobs. Of those, 1,300 may have gone overseas, unlikely to return.

The job exodus is sparking intense debate.

How should America respond? Is outsourcing just another word for free trade? Or is the trend a more ominous threat to our standard of living?

The evidence isn't clear.

What is certain is that jobs such as software development and chip design -- once thought to be immune to the trend -- are taking flight.

The outflow shows no sign of stopping.

Hong Kong tops the list

Journal Record, The (Oklahoma City) , Jul 7, 1997 by Ron Perry

Tokyo is no longer the world's most expensive city for business travelers, according to Runzheimer International, a consulting group. That honor now belongs to Hong Kong, where daily expenses, including meals and a business-type hotel room, cost an average of $474 a day, vs. $440 in Tokyo. All of the cities in the Top 10 list are located abroad. New York City, although the most expensive U.S. city, is relatively cheap at $305 per day.

Business class improved

A number of U.S. airlines are improving their business class cabins. Delta Air Lines is adding laptop electrical outlets to 70 percent of its business class cabins (except for L-1011 aircraft). Leg room (the "pitch," or distance between one row of seats and the next) will increase from 40 or 45 inches to 50 inches. The carrier is adding individual video units to each seat so that you may watch what you like, when you like. Food will be upgraded, as will in-flight phone service and flight attendant training. Miles for investing Bull&Bear Securities, the discount brokerage firm, has teamed with American Airlines' AAdvantage frequent flyer program to offer miles to investors. Bull&Bear will award 200 miles for each trade (500 miles for your first trade), 1,000 miles for opening a new account and one mile for every $10 of asset value maintained in the account on an annual basis with a minimum asset level of $25,000. In addition, you'll get miles for asset transfers: beginning at 500 miles for transfers of $1,000-$100,000. For more information, call 800-285-5232. Cruise deal Radisson Seven Seas Cruises has joined Delta's frequent flyer program with some interesting benefits for travelers on select Panama Canal and Costa Rica cruises. If reservations are made by Sept. 15 for certain cruises sailing between December and April, the second passenger in a cabin gets 50 percent off, plus free economy airfare from select East Coast cities and a free two-night stay in San Jose, Costa Rica. You'll also get a bonus of 5,000 frequent flyer miles. Booking up You may find it a little harder getting a cabin on Carnival Cruise Lines in the coming months. Bookings are up over 42 percent compared to the year-earlier period, but capacity is only up about 13 percent. Perhaps one of the reasons is Carnival's vacation guarantee program, which they've extended through 1998. That program promises that if a passenger doesn't like their cruise, they can get off at the first non-U.S. port of call and get a refund for the unused portion of the cruise, plus airfare back to the point of embarkation. But most people seem to love their cruises, Carnival notes; less than one- tenth of 1 percent of passengers asked for a refund during the trial period.
